The Tour Guide Mistake
I was showing Poblacion to a friend who had arrived in Manila that day. He was jet-lagged, not especially enthusiastic about going out, and had agreed because I had described Poblacion as essential and insisted. We went to the bar I always went to first in Poblacion — my default. Then to the second bar. Then, because I was playing tour guide and my itinerary was the priority rather than the actual evening, to a third. Then I tried to go to a fourth. By the third bar my friend was obviously tired and not enjoying himself. I was enjoying myself less than usual because I was performing a Poblacion tour rather than having a Poblacion evening. The energy was wrong. I was going through a checklist rather than following the natural development of a good night.
What I Regret
Not taking him back to the hotel when he said he was tired at the second bar. The correct response to "I'm pretty tired, honestly" is "okay, let's head back." Not "come on, one more." The one more served my agenda, not the evening. We left at 11:40 PM. He was relieved. I felt vaguely foolish. I also regret the tour-guide approach to Poblacion. Poblacion does not work as a tour. It works as an experience that develops at its own pace when you are genuinely present in it. The best nights I have had in Poblacion were the ones where I had no itinerary — just a starting point and the willingness to follow whatever happened next.
How Poblacion Actually Works
The serendipitous conversation at bar one that leads you to bar two that you would not have chosen. The live music that starts in a venue you almost walked past. The unexpected connection with strangers at a table who invite you to join them. None of this happens when you are executing a tour itinerary. All of it becomes available when you put the itinerary down and actually show up. The night I regret from Poblacion ended with me staying for one drink alone, which was actually when the evening finally became enjoyable — because alone and unscheduled, I dropped the tour-guide performance and just sat at the bar and let the place do what it does. Poblacion is better than any tour of it. Show up. Let it happen.
